The Institute for the Study of Children, Families and Communities explores contemporary issues and enriches family and community life through the application of scholarly research and practical expertise, innovative projects and leadership in collaborative problem-solving efforts.

The Institute operates through four Centers and a Publications Unit. Centers comprising the Institute are:

  • Center for Child and Family Programs

  • The Center for Community Building and Civic Engagement

  • The Center for Applied Research

The Institute was founded in 1979. It began by doing pioneering research and education programs in the area of foster care. In the past several years it has broadened its problem focus and works with a wide range of agencies, organizations, and groups serving people at the community level. Locally, regionally, and nationally the Institute for the Study of Children, Families and Communities seeks to be a leader in bridging between the campus and the community.
